Daredevil Egg Experiment

This experiment was written by 12 year old Michael R. from Florida, USA!

Daredevil egg

Background:

This experiment is used to observe another Newton’s second law, according to which the force applied is the product of mass times the acceleration produced in the object.

Problem:

To verify Newton’s Second Law by using a placemat, tube and egg.

Materials:

An egg;
A glass of water;
An empty Smarties tube;
A placemat.

Procedure:

Take a glass full of water and put a placemat on top of the glass with its shiny side towards the bottom. Now place the smarties tube on top of the mat vertically. Also, place the egg on top of the tube. Now, give the placemat a sharp but short push to move it out of place. Observe that the plate goes flying along with the tube but the egg just falls into the glass and doesn’t fly away. This is because the force is applied on the placemat but not on the egg. Thus there is no acceleration produced in the egg and it falls straight down.
